From Tutor to Business Owner: Anthony Marchese Launches Tutor Doctor Camden

For many professionals exploring franchise ownership, the most powerful motivation is the opportunity to build a business that genuinely makes a difference. That sense of purpose is what led Anthony Marchese to launch Tutor Doctor Camden, a new tutoring business designed to support students across Northwest London.

Originally from Canada, Anthony moved to the UK in 2021 and quickly recognised the diverse educational needs within Camden and surrounding boroughs. In January 2026, he officially launched his Tutor Doctor franchise, bringing personalised one-to-one tutoring support to families and schools across Camden, Brent, Kensington, and Chelsea.

But for Anthony, tutoring has always been about far more than grades.

“While studying at university in Canada, I started working as a tutor where I saw first-hand the impact personalised tutoring could have on young people. It didn’t have to all be about improving grades. A lot of the time, progress was helping a student regain their confidence.”

His experience reflects a broader truth about education: when students feel supported and understood, academic improvement often follows naturally.

A Journey Rooted in Education

Anthony’s path to business ownership has been shaped by years of experience in both teaching and tutoring.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from York University and a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University. During his time at university, he began tutoring with Tutor Doctor Vaughan, an experience that would influence his career for years to come.

Over the next decade, he built extensive experience across both Canada and the UK, including:

  • Three years teaching in schools

  • Eleven years of tutoring experience

  • One year teaching at a secondary school in London

  • Charity work focused on supporting communities

Throughout this time, tutoring remained a constant.

“Tutoring found me long before running a business ever crossed my mind. It sparked a real passion for helping young people succeed.”

One student in particular left a lasting impression.

Anthony worked with a young learner who had grown to dislike school entirely. Over nearly three years of support, her outlook slowly changed.

“She really hated school. Gradually she regained confidence and eventually got into college. The experience showed me the real power of personalised tutoring – shifting her mindset was just as important as improving her test scores.”

Stories like this helped shape Anthony’s long-term ambition: building a tutoring business that focuses on confidence, mindset, and individual support, not just exam performance.

Why Tutor Doctor?

When Anthony began exploring how to launch his own tutoring business, he was drawn to the education franchise model offered by Tutor Doctor.

Having previously worked within the Tutor Doctor system in Canada, he already understood the value of combining local ownership with proven systems and support.

What stood out most was the ability to build a community-focused business while benefiting from an established framework.

Tutor Doctor franchisees benefit from:

  • A proven business model in a high-demand sector

  • Comprehensive training and onboarding

  • Ongoing operational and marketing support

  • A global network of experienced franchise owners

  • Systems designed to support both families and schools

This structure allows franchise owners to focus on growing their business and building relationships within their community.

Importantly, Tutor Doctor franchisees are business owners, not tutors themselves. Their role is to recruit and manage talented tutors while building partnerships with families, schools, and local organisations.

This approach allows franchisees to scale their business while maintaining a personalised service for students.

Building a Service for Camden’s Diverse Community

Northwest London’s education landscape played a major role in Anthony’s decision to launch his business in Camden.

The area’s diverse schools, communities, and learning needs present both a challenge and an opportunity for personalised support.

“Northwest London has such a mix of schools, backgrounds and learning needs – it felt like the right place to build something that really reflects the diversity of how children learn.”

Through Tutor Doctor Camden, Anthony connects students with carefully selected tutors who match their subject needs, learning style, and personality.

These tutors support students by:

  • Closing learning gaps

  • Preparing for exams

  • Building academic confidence

  • Developing stronger study habits

The goal is not simply academic improvement, but helping students rediscover a positive relationship with learning.

Life Beyond the Business

Like many franchise owners, Anthony’s life outside work reflects a balance of professional ambition and personal interests.

He lives in Hendon with his fiancée Kristen and their cat Pickles, and enjoys a range of hobbies that help him recharge outside of running the business.

A self-confessed sci-fi and video game enthusiast, Anthony is a fan of Star Wars and Warhammer 40k and enjoys exploring immersive fictional worlds. He’s also a passionate sports fan and car enthusiast who enjoys spending weekends watching games.

One of his personal missions? Introducing students in the UK to his favourite sport.

“I’ve been trying to introduce all of my students to hockey – specifically cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs.”

These personal connections often help build strong relationships with students, reinforcing the idea that learning works best when there is trust, relatability, and encouragement.

A Takeaway for Future Franchise Owners

Anthony’s story highlights an important point for professionals considering a career change into franchise ownership.

You don’t need to follow a traditional path into business ownership. Many Tutor Doctor franchisees come from diverse professional backgrounds — including teaching, corporate leadership, and management.

What matters most is:

  • A commitment to helping others succeed

  • Strong people and leadership skills

  • A willingness to learn and grow

  • A desire to build something meaningful in your community

Franchise ownership can offer the opportunity to combine purpose with professional independence, creating a business that delivers both personal fulfilment and long-term growth.
