Franchisee Spotlight: How Jon and Mia O’Malley Are Growing Their Tutor Doctor York Education Franchise

For Jon and Mia O’Malley, taking over Tutor Doctor York in March 2023 was an opportunity to combine their commercial experience with a business that could make a meaningful difference in their community.

With backgrounds spanning finance, leadership, sales and business management, the couple recognised the potential of an established education franchise. What began as an investment in a business with a strong local reputation has developed into a growing network of school partnerships, tutors and relationships across York.

But their journey has been about more than business growth. It’s also been about finding purpose in their work, building lasting relationships and discovering the value of being part of a supportive franchise community.

“For me, there was a real purpose behind the business,” explained Jon. “But I could also see the commercial opportunity, particularly around working with schools and local authorities.”

From Commercial Careers to Business Ownership

Before joining Tutor Doctor, Jon had built an extensive career working with multinational companies, including Coca-Cola, Universal and Experian. He then spent 17 years running his own civil recovery and litigation business.

Mia brought complementary experience in leadership, account management, sales and legal services.

Together, their skills provided a strong foundation for managing a business focused on developing relationships, supporting customers and building a team.

“My background was more around leadership and managing relationships,” explained Mia. “We have different skillsets, which actually works really well because we can divide things up and play to our own strengths.”

Although Jon was already comfortable with business ownership, franchising wasn't something he had initially considered. Having spent years running his own company, he valued independence and the freedom to make his own decisions.

However, a personal experience changed the couple's perspective.

When searching for a tutor for Mia's son, they saw the difference that personalised educational support could make.

“We saw first-hand what a difference the right tutor could make,” recalled Mia. “It wasn’t just about his grades. His confidence started to grow quite quickly, and it made us realise how important it is to find the right approach for each child and give them the support they need.”

That experience encouraged them to explore Tutor Doctor as a business ownership opportunity.

Why Tutor Doctor?

For Jon and Mia, Tutor Doctor offered a balance between commercial opportunity and meaningful community impact.

The couple were particularly interested in the potential to work with schools and local authorities, alongside supporting families through personalised tuition.

They also recognised the advantages of operating within an established franchise model, including:

  • Proven systems and processes to support day-to-day operations.

  • Business ownership and independence, with the freedom to develop their local territory.

  • Access to a supportive franchise network and the experience of other business owners.

  • Opportunities for growth through relationships with families, schools and local authorities.

For Jon, the biggest change was understanding that franchising didn't mean sacrificing autonomy.

“I realised that franchising didn’t mean giving up control,” he explained. “You have systems and support behind you, but you’re still running your own business and making decisions about your territory.”

This combination of independence and established business infrastructure gave the couple confidence in their decision to take over the existing Tutor Doctor York territory.

The Support and Community Behind Their Journey

When Jon and Mia took ownership in March 2023, they benefited from the guidance of the previous franchise owner, who shared valuable insights, contacts and practical experience.

This support helped them understand how the business operated while identifying opportunities to develop the territory further.

“That made a huge difference,” said Mia. “We had somebody who could talk us through how everything worked and gave us an incredibly honest insight into how the business ticked. It was a great foundation on which to build.”

Alongside this initial guidance, the couple became part of Tutor Doctor's wider franchise network.

Tutor Doctor franchisees have access to structured training, ongoing business coaching, operational resources and opportunities to learn from fellow business owners.

For Jon, who had spent many years running an independent business, the value of that community was a welcome discovery.

“I didn’t realise how useful it would be to have people around you who have faced the same challenges,” he admitted. “When you’re on your own, you can spend hours trying to work something out. Within the network, there’s usually somebody who has already been through it.”

Over time, these professional relationships have also developed into genuine friendships.

The experience has reinforced one of the key benefits of franchise ownership: having the independence to lead your business while benefiting from the knowledge and experience of others.

The Results: Building Stronger School Partnerships in York

Since taking over Tutor Doctor York, Jon and Mia have focused on developing trusted relationships with schools, families and local authorities.

When they acquired the business, it had existing partnerships with two local schools.

Today, their business works with:

  • 10 secondary schools across the local area.

  • 10 primary schools, expanding their reach into the community.

  • Approximately 70 tutors in their network, with around 30 working regularly with the business.

These achievements reflect the couple's commitment to responsiveness, consistent service and building long-term relationships.

“We’ve always focused on providing a good service and being responsive,” explained Jon. “If a school gets in touch, we want to deal with it quickly. If a family needs help, we want them to feel that they’re being looked after.”

Their growing involvement with schools has become an especially rewarding part of the business.

“It’s super rewarding to be working directly with schools,” added Mia. “Knowing that what we’re doing is making a genuine difference to young people’s lives – you can’t put a price on that.”

Importantly, much of their business momentum has come through recommendations from schools and local authorities.

This demonstrates how consistent service and trusted local relationships can contribute to sustainable business development.

For prospective franchise owners, Jon and Mia's experience also highlights the potential of Tutor Doctor's Schools Delivery Programme, which provides a framework for franchisees to support schools and local authorities with tailored educational services.

Looking Ahead: Exploring Further Growth

With established processes, a growing tutor network and strong relationships across York, Jon and Mia are now exploring the possibility of expanding into Leeds.

“We know what works now,” explained Jon. “We’ve built the processes, developed the relationships and established a reputation in York, so there’s a real opportunity to take that experience into a bigger neighbouring territory.”

However, expansion isn't simply about increasing the size of their business.

The couple remain focused on maintaining the standards and personal approach that have helped them develop trust within their community.

“We don’t want growth for the sake of growth,” stressed Mia. “The priority is making sure that as the business gets bigger, families and schools continue to receive the same level of service.”

What Potential Franchise Owners Can Learn from Jon and Mia

Jon and Mia's journey offers valuable insights for professionals considering a career transition, an education franchise or a new business ownership opportunity.

Their experience demonstrates that you don't need a background in teaching to own a Tutor Doctor franchise.

Franchisees are business owners, not tutors. Their role is to lead their local operation, develop relationships, recruit and manage tutors, and create opportunities for the business to grow.

Skills developed in other industries can be equally valuable, particularly:

  • Leadership and people management to build and support an effective team.

  • Relationship-building to develop trust with schools, families and community partners.

  • Commercial awareness to identify opportunities and make informed business decisions.

  • Adaptability and resilience to respond to changing needs and challenges.

  • A commitment to learning and continually improving the business.

While Tutor Doctor provides training, systems and ongoing support, franchise ownership still requires dedication, preparation and a willingness to put in the work.

“You need to do your due diligence and make sure the franchise suits your skillset,” advised Jon. “We were fortunate that our backgrounds gave us a lot of the experience we needed, so we could get moving quickly. But you still have to put the work in.”

For Mia, being willing to adapt is equally important.

“Education changes all the time, so you have to be prepared to adapt. It’s about looking at what’s happening now but also thinking about what might be coming next.”

Build More Than a Business with Tutor Doctor

Jon and Mia's story is an example of how business ownership can bring together commercial ambition, independence and the opportunity to make a positive impact.

By building on an established business, strengthening school partnerships and drawing on the experience of the wider franchise network, they've developed a growing operation rooted in their local community.

Their journey also reinforces an important message for anyone exploring franchise ownership: sustainable progress takes time, effort and a commitment to delivering a service people can trust.

“Trust the process and build something sustainable,” concluded Jon. “We’ve never been interested in chasing short-term growth. The foundations we’ve put in place are what will allow us to keep moving forward for the long haul.”

If you're considering the next stage of your career and want to explore what owning an education franchise could look like, Tutor Doctor offers the opportunity to build and lead your own business with the support of an established network.
